Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe – Who is this for?

A few weeks back, I had the chance to test out the all-new Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe for a while on the streets of Abu Dhabi. It left me with a big question that I am yet to answer; Who is this for?

So let’s start off by talking about the looks.

It looks handsome from the front. Very typical C-Class cues along with some unique touches for the Coupe. Plenty of chrome and bling making this unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz. Lovely curves from the clearly wider stance compared to the sedan. As it turns out it is about 2.5 inches wider, making it more attractive and the  extra width will make the car handle even better than the sedan.

This was the top of the range model, so expect all the bells and whistles of keyless entry, keyless go, an array of driving sensors and aids.

Moving around to the side, and that is where the C-Coupe starts to disappoint slightly. I feel the overall shape is slightly off. Starting from the front all the way to the doors is pure beauty, but the doors backwards… I am not sure. It definitely looks taller than it should back there, but that is surely for rear seat occupant head-room.

The rear is very S-Class Coupe-like and that is not a bad thing, but at certain angles, it didn’t fit right – could be the height I was talking about earlier.

Overall the car is still very handsome and is a very nice small sized coupe, but that brings on several other points as I cannot just leave it at that!

The engine in the C300 is a 241 horsepower, 2 litre, inline-4 cylinder engine with pressure direct injection, multispark ignition and the ability to fine-tune itself for efficiency. This is definitely an ultra-modern engine and the power is enough to satisfy a 0-100 kmph time of 5.9 seconds. The only problem is, it felt soul-less. It felt like an engine that was created for this paragraph, not for the driver sitting behind the steering wheel.

I never expected it to be an AMG but still, its a coupe, dual exhausts, Sport + mode under your fingertips, a wider and lower stance than the sedan.. give me something!

The gearbox was a bit of a let down as well. It wasn’t their ultra-modern 9 speed transmission either. It was slightly slower than expected and it would automatically upshift a little too early for me. I would shift only to find the car double-up-shifting ruining the hard acceleration.

Moving into the car itself, it is a typical Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which means nice materials, beautiful layout and smart controls.

The seats were fairly supportive and sporty. With some adjustment, they could really keep you in your seat around corners.

The rear seats were fairly spacious for a car this small (must be the roof-line) and with minimal leg room.

The stunning dashboard was very modern Mercedes-Benz, but I wished they had kitted the top of the range with more tech than they did for the price.

Which brings me to my final and main gripe with this car. This model, as tested, was roughly 270,000 AED (roughly 72,000$) and that made absolutely no sense!

A similarly equipt C300 Sedan would easily be around 70-80% of the price. What exactly does one get for the 270,000 AED? To me, they get a handsome coupe with a Mercedes-Benz badge, a nice interior excluding great tech unless specially ordered, an engine and gearbox that are mid-range with decent performance that wont wow you, and finally a drive that is definitely lovely but no where near as lovely as the price is worth.

And this raised the question, Who is this really for?
